How Having Kids Will Change You

by | Jun 28, 2017 | Life

If you haven’t had kids, you could talk about it with a long-time mother for hours on end, but you’d still have no idea what it really means to be a parent. The fact of it is that there’s no real way of understanding parenthood until you’ve had some experience of it. If you’re trying for babies or you’ve already got one on the way, here are a few ways you can expect it to change you.

You’ll Sacrifice Other Things You Love

When you have a child, they become the centre of all your love and devotion, and many other things quickly fall by the wayside. There are countless couples out there who had loved living a bustling city centre, had a child, and then quickly grown to hate it! After all, having to carry a baby in a car seat down several flights of stairs every day is great for fitting exercise in, but not so much for your nerves! This is just one of the ways in which having a baby pushes you to re-prioritise a lot of things in your life. When you become a parent for the first time, you’ll be amazed at what you’ll let go of for the good of your baby.

You’ll Start Worrying a Lot More

When you have a child, parental anxiety will hang over all of your thoughts, and won’t evaporate for years. Once you have a baby, every neighbourhood dog you’ve been petting for years will suddenly seem mean-spirited and dangerous, every minor issue at your work will make you think that you’re going to be fired any day now, and every ad you see for family lawyers will stick in your mind. Again, once you have a child, they become the most precious thing in the world to you, which can lead some mothers to become a little paranoid of the world!

Planning Will Become Essential

If you’ve been wishing you were more organised for your whole life, then having a kid might be just the ticket! When you’re a parent, you can forget about all those nights of whipping up an improvised dinner whenever you feel like it. You’re going to be spending a lot of Sunday evenings preparing meals for your baby that will last you the rest of the week and drafting meticulous schedules that will let you juggle the trials of childhood with everything else in your life.

If you used to spend your evenings watching movies and reading, then all that’s about to change! Once you’re a parent, your child will become one of your main go-to sources of entertainment. Watching them coo, babble and explore the house on all fours, not to mention learning to walk and talk, is absolutely fascinating, especially with the knowledge that there’s a part of you in this quickly blossoming human. There’ll still be room for all the more grown-up forms of entertainment, but with a kid in the house, expect to fall behind on your favourite series!
